Rafiq comes up behind me, panting with exertion. He stops a few yards away.

I’ve stopped and thrown myself down flat.

Lying on my back.

Pine trees looming above me, reaching up into a night sky bursting with stars.

Wet grass under my body, under my bare arms, touching my neck.

The smell of grass, pine sap, dirt, mulch, wilderness.

“There you are, there you are,” Rafiq says. He sounds like he’s crying.

A cellphone flashlight arcs over me as he bends down for a closer look.

I raise my hand to block the light.

“Shut that off,” I say.

“Are you okay?”

Behind him, I see the Camry’s stationary headlights in the darkness, illuminating a patch of road. The front doors are open, the interior light on. The car is a tiny island of light in an ocean of darkness. It’s only a few dozen yards away but when I look away, in this direction, it feels like I’m somewhere else altogether. Somewhere civilization doesn’t exist. Natural. Wild. Serene.

We’re in the pines.

“This is where they came to bury that guy, on that show,” I say.

He looks around.

“They think they killed him, so they bring him out here to bury the body in the woods. Turns out he’s still alive. They force him to dig his own grave at gunpoint. He attacks them with a shovel, runs off. They never see him again. He vanishes.”

“Ah. Sopranos.”

“Ashwin was a big fan. That, Breaking Bad, all those early streaming shows. Did they call them streaming shows back then?”

“I think just TV.”

“Could you please put that fucking thing off?”

He puts off the flashlight app, plunging us into darkness.

The night returns, seeping into the edge of vision, a 360 degree panorama, complete with smells and sounds.

I look up.

The stars look back.

It feels peaceful here. Away from all the problems and complications of 21st century living. Like it must have been a thousand years ago. Or a million.

“Ruth?” he says. “Are you okay?”

I don’t answer at once.

“Ruth?”

When I still don’t answer, he starts to get nervous.

“Maybe this was a bad idea. You’ve been through a lot these past few days already. Maybe I shouldn’t have brought you to see Merwyn. Maybe it was all too much too soon.”

I wish I could lie here all night, looking up at the night sky, far from all the madness and mayhem, Bureaucracy and politics of everyday living. Just lie here like grass sleeping beneath the stars. Outside of time.

Something moves nearby, rustling leaves, something heavy and low, moving fast.

“We should get back to the car,” Rafiq says uneasily.

I stay where I am.

He waits.

Several minutes tick by.

I lie back on my hands and watch the stars. They look so far removed from all our problems. So peaceful and beautiful. Yet they’re all nuclear explosions and burning gases and imploding singularities, the process of creation ongoing on a scale the human mind can’t begin to fathom. We can measure it and record it, take pictures with our telescopes, write our books and theses. But the truth of all that violent beauty is beyond all our words, images, theories.
